I have been readin a lot about new recievers with HDMI switching/conversion ability. I understand that this helps upconvert s - video and composite signals to hdmi

My question is if I have an upscaling dvd player which uses hdmi and a tv that accepts an hdmi cable... do I still need this feature? I guess my question is if my reciever does not possess the hdmi switching/conversion ability can I still directly hook the dvd player to the tv using hdmi and still enjoy surround sound from the reciever or will I be only able to get the 5.1 surround if I go through my receiver using component inputs(but sacrifice the upscaling feature in the bargain)?

If all the above sound like gibberish :-) just tell me .. for the purpose of playing dvds with upscaled picture and surround sound.. do I need both a receiver with hdmi and a dvd with hdmi.. or just the dvd player will suffice?

Just the DVD player, hook the video up directly to your TV.
