i have a '96 sony TV without S video or video component outputs. my inputs include: coaxial, Left and Right audio, and composite video. my outputs are: L and R audio. someone told me that surround isn't even possible with this TV. is there any truth to this?

Surround sound is typically independent of your TV and depends mainly on your media source.
DVD players will play Dolby Digital or DTS depending on which one you buy. A VCR must be HI-FI to play prologic surround. Sattelite and some cable boxes have stereo outputs that produce surround if the show is broadcast in surround.
All of these sources can be hooked directly to a receiver and your "surround sound" then depends on what your receiver will produce be it Pro-logic, Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.
This is all independent of what type tv you have.
