Easy answer: try different settings and placements. First off, set the gain on your subwoofer to zero and work from there, gradually increasing/decreasing as needed. From person to person, tastes in audio quality will differ, so your best bet is to try out different settings. I personlly would use digital coaxial cables from a source like a DVD player to your reciever.
