Hi,
I'm new to this forum.
I'm interested in purchasing a home theater system (receiver, speakers, DVD) with a budget of around $3000.
The problem is that I can’t find any store to help me. It shocks me to find that most stores don’t have a listening room that allows you to compare various receivers/speakers/etc. I want to listen to the equipment before purchasing (surely I am not alone in this). I live in Stateline, NV which is sort of in between Reno, NV and Sacramento, CA and I travel a lot to the San Francisco Bay Area on business. Does anyone out there know of a store in these areas who sell equipment in my price range that will let me listen to various brands before purchasing?

Why dont you go to yellowpages.com and let your fingers do the walking. It shouldnt be that hard to open the yellow pages and find several HT specialists. |

I got a list of over 50 stores and called about 6 who all responded similarly. I was hoping to narrow down the search through some recommendations from this group.

Im fond of Ultimate Electronics, but that wont do you any good on the "Left" coast. Most HiFi stores(not counting the 'big box' chains') are regional, and you'll just have to do your homework and find the good LOCAL hifi shops yourself. I doubt you'll find Tweeter out west either.
What do you do when you need your carpet cleaned??? That's simple....You'd probably open up the yellow pages for your local community to look at the listings. If you're like me, you'd probably start with the large ads first, and work your way down.
Finding a quality hifi shop is no different..... |

You could also do some research on the gear online and get a shopping list of what seems to be a match for your requirements. Then hit the manufacturer websites & see what dealers they have in your area. |

Exactly.....
Especially if you'll looking for specific hi-end gear. I couldnt imagine driving from store to store looking for a certain brand of speaker........LOL
I agree totally with what Chris is saying. You should be able to narrow down your search to a few 'finalists' on the web, and then find the stores based on what those finalists are. For example, if you're interested in Paradigm speakers, it will take you all of a few seconds to navigate their manufacturer site to find retailers in your area.

One idea: I bought my stuff at the Good Guys in Emeryville (just over the Bay Bridge from San Francisco). They're kinda faceless, but the guy I talked to was pretty knowledgeable, and they do have good selection and a good listening room (bring your own CD's). I did pretty well for under $2000, and I got everything you're looking for but the DVD player. I'm sure they'll let you spend more! I live in the area, so I was able to listen to their stuff and shop for the same on-line as a bargaining tool; they will discount if you buy a few items. Or you can just buy it on-line... |

Try the Magnolia HIFI store that's located inside of the Reno BestBuy.
Or go to their website and find one in California. |
