Is it possible and technically correct to hook a 6.1 speaker system up to this receiver since it is "rated" as a 7.1? The only difference is the second rear surround between the two types. Can the receiver be told to operate as a 6.1 system? I don't know to much about stuff ,just learning so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Even though it is 7.1, that only means it is 7.1 capable. It all depends on the source you are using. There is no 7.1 audio tracks availabel for DVDs, only 6.1 (and there are very few of those). If you play a DVD that has a 6.1 audio track (see Gladiator, LOTR Extended), it will use all 7 of the speakers, but your back 2 speakers will produce the same thing, while all the other speakers will have there own distinct audio. If the system is set up properly, the two back speakers should seem like the sound is directly between them. Your receiver will produce the audio based on the source and it will automatically adjust itself to this source. Hope that helps.
