Apologies for how dunb this may sound but this audio is an unknown field for me.

I am in the process of purchasing a new sony plasma TV and want to get 5.1 surround kit at the same time. Questions:

1)Do I NEED a seperate amp or can the 5.1 system work through my DVD? (good sony dvd)
2) What is a good affordable 5.1 set-up
3) What is a not-so-good but very cheap alternative?
4) I have been offered 5.1 speakers and sub-woofer made by videologic for a very cheap pric (no amp) - any thoughts?

any other tips n tricks greatfully accepted

Thanks in advance

1.) Yes, you need a separate amp...actually a separate receiver.

2.)A good affordable 5.1 set up is one that you can afford.

3.)No such thing as a not-so-good but very cheap alternative. See no. 2.) above.

4.) Pass on the video logic until you have made some research and a budget.

First let us start with your budget. How much are you willing to spend? How big is your room?

That is a very tight budget.
However, I can recommend the HK AVR130 coupled with Mordaunt Short Premiere. A nice little budget system a little over your budget, but you can use the Video Logic if ou have to. Just save up for upgraded speaker later.

What have you looked at so far?

Not looked at anything yet - right at the beginning. Ignoring the £400 budget what would be a good entry level system?

It would be good to know what you have available in your area as I am on the other side of the pond.
