I have a DVD player with outputs for 5.1
I have a stereo pre-amp.
Is there a way to run the additional DVD outputs straight to a power amp, by-passing the pre-amp, or is it mandatory to upgrade to a surround-amp/processor to use the surround channels?

Go for the upgrade mate. With the amp you have at the moment you can only decode stereo, two channels, left and right. Your DVD player wants it to take 6 channels, L, R, C, RL, RR and sub. You'll need an amp with 5.1 / DTS etc options. Shop around and do a bit of research.

Oh, and pre-amp.. are you sure thats what you mean?
