My current 5.1 receiver is dying and I want to replace it. Almost all new receivers seem to be at least 6.1 or 7.1. Will ALL 6.1 and 7.1 receivers work in a 5.1 configuration? I have no plans to add more speakers (nor the space to put them).

Yes you can still use your 5.1 setup with either a 6.1 or 7.1 receiver.
