I have just purchased the Onkyo HTS-770 and the speaker wire that came with it is rather small. 22gauge if I am correct. Would replacing the speaker wire with thicker wire say 16gauge wire really make that much of a discernable difference also I will have to buy a new sub cable to put the sub where i want it. Would going with something expensive make a difference there also?

Some claim that they hear a difference, and some claim that they don't. However, a good 14 gauge speaker cable should serve you well.
Just make sure that it is good quality speaker cable, and get something that is reasonably priced.
