I'm looking to pick up a JBL E35 center channel and E250 sub. I have some "old school" floor speakers. Will my old floor speakers serve the purpose of my 2 fronts with 5.1 surround, or should I invest into some new bookshelf speakers to serve as the front speakers? If I was to buy new front speakers, I wont have any money left for the center or sub...

My thought is to buy the center\sub and add some nice JBL floor speakers down the road

You should be fine. Try them and find out how you like them. You can always upgrade later.
