I was trying to play DTS DVDs on my Panasonic DMRE55S recorder and they would not play. The receiver came up with error. Then I noticed that there WAS a DTS logo on my DVD player that said DTS and under it "2.0 digital output". Is this the reason the DTS 5.1 DVDs would not play? I would appreciate your input...

Sounds like it is outputting only stereo sound, hence the 2.0, 2 for each channel, .0 for the subwoffer.

That would be why 5.1's don't play.
