I have a Pioneer DVR-533H-S that has been working well until recently. Lately it has been acting erratic. It will load all channel information for 'TV Guide' on screen but will not navigate to channels 20 -27. I know the TV receives the signals because on Video 1 (ie by-passing the DVR) the TV plays the channels. I don't know if it is significant but sometimes when the DVR is first turned on the "last channel" comes up as a blank screen. I have re-run 'set-up' multiple times but have not actually seen the DVR scan the channels.

If the machine is dying, I would appreciate suggestions of other PVR's that can record to HDD and DVD as well as display TV Guide (or another free extended info guide)

Try the DVD recorder forum over at VideoHelp. There are quite a few die hard Pioneer owners over there that know the recorders inside out.
