i am thinking of taking my vcr out of the system.- and buy a dvd recorder, To record a digital signal what must i buy and will that recording be HD.

If you want to record HD you need an Hd Tivo or HD-DVR from a cable or satellite company. DVD recorders don't record HD or a digital signal.
