Roger, The BW problem is normally a colorwheel issue... In the earlier generation samsung TVs such as yours, the colorwheel can go bad without triggering the TV's CW Speed sensor.. This is the cause of a B&W picture!
In the later generation samsungs, a bad colorwheel would send a signal to the main board of the TV preventing it to turn on.. giving you a "lamp" light.
