I have direct TV hr21 box, Sony xbr4, use hdmi for connections. Do I set the STB to NATIVE and let the TV do all the scaling or do I select 480p,720p, and 1080I on the STB. Or what?

If Native is the same thing as "pass through" I would be inclined to use that. I find it hard to believe that the deinterlacer/scaler would perform better in the HR21 than the video processer in the XBR4. I would also try comparing that setting with 1080i since that is closest to your display's native resolution.
