My VCR was coming on but shutting off shortly after, and the tape was stuck inside. Another person on this site(Lora) wrote her experience(which worked for me), so I thought I would pass on the info. My son and I opened the VCR(phillips screwdriver), with VCR unplugged of course. I looked for the small belt attached to the small pulley/gear near the back, and forcefully turned it a bit. It clicked as I turned it. We plugged it in and it worked. My husband was previously laughing at us when he walked by, and he would've just thrown it away. Afterwards, he felt dumb. Thank you to this website and to Lora(?) for the information you offer to the public. Shelley in OK}
