i get error message e454040990 when i try to record. i am sure i am using the right disk i have cleaned the recorder, i dont know what to do to fix this problem.

Try using a DVD / CD cleaner disc in the unit - this might fix the problem - I had the same format error on a Toshiba unit using Sony and VBerbatim discs - once cleaned the unit worked fine
