I read Joel Brinkley's Feb 03 article on the Samsung SIR-TS160 where he says DIRECTV's "official digital connection format" is DVI. Does this mean that my HD ready Sony kp-57hw40 with only COMPONENT video inputs for HD will not be able to receive DIRECTV's HD programming???

No, Component isn't digital. So if you buy the Samsung 160 your TV will work fine.
