I'm trying to compare models of LCD's and I see different contrasts, some say 1000:1, some 800:1 and so on. Which is better, higher the number to 1 or lower, and really, what does it mean?

Larger contrast ratios are better, meaning, inessense, better black levels, or the ability to diffrentiate the lightest of light from the darkest of dark.

The catch is that there is limited validity between manufacturers, so you can compare wth suredness only within the same brand. That being said, these things are measured by consumers as well who are so inclined technically. Anyway, there are also statuc and dynamic contrast ratios. Go for apples to apples.
