I just noticed the other day that after I put a DVD in and it's loading my TV displays "DVD 480p" in small letters on the load screen. The DVD is progressive scan but not a very expensive one.

Should I be able to change the settings to get it to 720p or 1080i?

If the DVD player upconverts and the TV accepts 720p or 1080i, then you can use them. Upconversion only works with HDMI, not component.
