I have a Comcast/Motorola DVR box and the drive is going bad, so looks like a new one is in order. Comcast says they cannot transfer the old shows to the new DVR. Can I do myself?

Nope, not unless you have a DVD recorder to transfer them to they will be lost. Even then you can't get them back on your DVR.
