It seems pretty expensive for not supporting 1080p. Even the next step up is 1699 and does not support 1080i. Any reason why?

May I humbly suggest that you look at the Cambridge Audio DVD89. I think it has everything you want - and the quality is amazing. I have its "little brother," the DVD87 - and could not be happier.

If you are looking for a multi-disc (5)player Marantz has a good scaler (1080p) in the VC6001 model. It came out at the end of 2006.

None of these make the top ten at Secrets Home Theater.
The Yamaha - DVD-S2500 tops the list in your price range.
