I just got Dish and the video looks nice and bright and clear, but sometimes the video looks like I'm watching a clip on the internet. I can see the compression happenning.
When Tom Brokaw does his little head wiggle, it looks like it's going to fall off.

Are they saving bandwidth? Why am I paying for this?
It seems to be mostly local channels, but I've noticed it on all the channels at one time or another.

Anyone?

You got it. They do save bandwidth by compressing all video and audio and they allocate less bandwidth to less important channels. It's normal.

I have DirecTV and the only time I can count on the types of compression artifacts you are describing are; when it is raining realy hard or when there are police card Mars lights flashing at close range.

You may want to have a look at DirecTV.
