Thinking of giving my girlfriend some Region 1 DVDs this xmas.... only one problem.. how do I set my LG LH-R5500SB to multi region (0)?

Is that a LH550SB? I have an LG LH550TB that I have just successfully unlocked. You could try this method as it could possibly also work for the S550SB, if that's what you meant to type.

open tray
using remote enter 0000
TV screen should show Region Edit and Region Code
enter 0 in Region edit
then press Enter
Press Pause then Power
When Powered on all regions should play
