That would be something else wouldn't it . . .

If that happened I wonder how the market would support having both formats? It seems there really only needs to be one but who knows?

A good editorial about both, pretty much hits the nail on the head so far. May be a pretty good prediction of the future.

Haing given this some time to jell in my adeled brain... it sounds like a plausible solution technically. However, if the technology costs of the chips and the associated license fees make such players much more expensive, then all bets would be off. It seems to me that when all is said and done, one of these formats will win out here in the USA (there appears to be many other formats in the world) and it will be the one that is "just good enough" but "less expensive" from the media and equipment perspective that will eventually win out.

6 years from now....

"hey whats that?"
"Oh my dual meadia DVD player... it plays Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs"
"Oh thats interesting... I remember Blu-Ray...
did'nt it loose out to HD-DVD which was replaced by the Holographic DVD?"
"uhh... yah."

http://www.dvdexploder.com/BlurayvsHDDVD.htm also has an interesting article. There's a bit of history there as well, regarding the rise of Blu-Ray.

I still use VHS. Just love the rattle.
