So my NEC has been acting funny and going straight into standby. Once, after moving it around, it went into component screen. Other than that, its just a click and standby. No fans or anything. So today I take off the back to look at power supply to see if there's obvious damage. Looks good to me (not a tv repair person, mind you) and just for the hell of it, power it up. It powers up and the fans are going and it seems to be fine. I try it several times and it powers up each time. My question is, what the heck was wrong with it and will this problem come back?

Someone suggested that this may be a thermal sensor. Does anyone know about this and does this make sense? If so, is this easily replacable?

Well a couple of things; Could be a power supply problem. Or it could be something simple like a bad capacitor/resistor; often that will require a board be changed out. Usually a good tech can locate the problem.
