I bought panasonic dvd-r disks which are labelled as 1-8x. The Toshiba dr4 stand-alone recorder will not accept this disk. Is it because of the 1-8 range? If the recorder doesn't like 16x, should I look for disks that are labelled as 8x only? Thank you in advance.

All 8x discs are 1-8x. You should be able to use up to 8x discs in a standalone. Burners usually tend to like some media and dislike others. The Toshiba may just not like the Panasonic discs, or the recorder may be defective.
