I'm looking for a cheap VCR/DVD combi to transfer some VHS tapes to DVD any suggestions? I take it not all combi's have this option?

Yes, they will all record non protected tapes. Combos are poor quality machines, you'd be better off to buy seperate. If any of the tapes are retail, you'll need a seperate VCR and stabilizer to copy them anyway.
