Just ordered my HK 635 and speakers. Now I need a DVD player.

I play a lot of movies - main reason for my HT system. All different kinds of movies, indie, to action thriller.
I want to play DVD +r, -r, CD's, MP3's, everything. I was looking at the Marantz, but they don't do DVD +R? Some of my movies are in that format... I -could- reburn them, but that would take hours and cost money for new labels and disks.
What about Harman Kardon players? It would match the HK 635 I just got. Would gladly like everyone's input. I'm not sure I want to spend more than 250-300, and it would be cool if it had a 5 disc changer. Seems like anything more expensive than that would be diminishing return.

Just because a manufacterer doesn't list +R compatibility doesn't mean the player won't play them. None of the players I've used list +R capability, all but 1 recorder has played them. If you can find the Marantz you want in a brick & mortar store, take a + disc there and see if it will play it. Look at this list, most of them list +R compatibility.

Hammers, you and I have the same receiver, although to say that you are better off "matching" a specific brand of player with a AVR is probably stretching things a bit. I caution against the use of disc changers. As a GENERAL rule of thumb, the specialised players do one job only, but do it well. The "all-singing, all-dancing" kit does a lot of things but doesn't do any of them exceptionally. If you look at my bio, it has the model of the upconverting LG player I have, and I find this to be an exceptional player, especially for the price. I caution, however, that your TV should have a DVI or HDMI input though to use the upconverting properly if you choose to go that route. If not, just take the time to research the specs of the progressive player you do pick, they key component to a dvd player is the video DAC, make sure yours has a good one. Good luck and happy hunting!

HK 635 + Ascend Acoustics Speakers. 340 mains, 340 center, 170 rears, and HSU 300 watt sub.

Looks like I'll be going for the Pioneer DV-588A.
I guess its a better buy than the Panasonic DVD S97S? Still not 100% sure, but maybe its better to buy in at this level knowing that new formats are due down the line.

Hard to guess, marketing pressure and advertising strategies sometimes have a way of pushing the superior product out of the way of big money. It may be benificial to wait a generation (in techological terms) before commiting to a new format.

Yeah, I think I'll just go with the Pioneer for now and then when things settle down with HDMI and the new disc formats I'll look again.
Been using the ol' PS/2 for playing DVD's, but I fear its about to die.
