I have a Curtis DVD player, my dvd remote stopped working so I bought an RCA universal remote, but it doesn't work properly, all the functions are messed up, any suggestions?

Need help too with home video
Have a Samsung HDTV with dolby sound surround - then when Cable was installed they installed the cable with a DVR Explorer 8300 HD.
I have now purchased a DVD player Toshiba
SD-394 SU - it plays vhs casettes cd's and dvd's
also capable of DVR
Was trying to do a quick install with cable co.DVR in place - and power on DVD player works but cannot get the set up menu's so something is wrong - hopefully real basic - HELP IF YOU KNOW
