I have my dvd hooked up but evidently not right. When my tv says vh1 I can hear my dvd playing, but I can not see the picture. When my TV says SVHS I can see my dvd, but can not hear it. What do I need to change so that I can hear and see my dvd?

Sounds like you've got the audio on one input and the s-video on another. Connect both to the same input.
