I only recently found this forum. It's great.

What is a region code? What purpose does it serve? If I only play/record USA CDs/DVDs, is this something I should worry about?

It's a safe site and has a comprehensive dvd code database. It also has a superb dvd code research service. They'll tell you all you need to know.
