I am in Canada but I have a friend in California that is a legit subscriber. Now that the HU is dead, is there any way I can get him to add an additional receiver to his setup and then haul that receiver up here and set it up at my house?

I would pay to up his package and pay for the sports packages, etc. Can this be done? I'd subscribe if I could but I can't up here, and I sure as hell ain't going back to local cable...

Yeah you can do it. Just have him plug in his phone line when he upgrades his package. Wait a day or two then hook up the box at your house. Don't plug in the phone line ever. You will lose the ability to order ppv but so what. You will still have all the channels you pay for including the sports packages you added.
