I have a 12 yaer old Hitachi, model CU4601K rear projection TV which worked great till a couple of days ago.

Now it turns ON with distorted color for 1/2 minute then shuts down. You can switch it on again after an hour, but shuts down agin after few seconds. Seems like some Circuit Protection circuit.

Called a technician, who said the Regulation is Off. It would cost about $400 - $500 (depending if needs new regulator pair) to fix it.

Is that possible & reasonable OR am I being conned? Technician never opened set & took 1 reading with DVM at back.
