In the midst of this dilemma I have so far tried a Belkin analogue to digital coder and found it did not work at all. The best I could get was a jagged B+W picture with no sound. Just parted with some precious drinking vouchers (Aus $) on a dedicated CanopusADVC55, hoping this will enable a clean read across Firewire.

I think this is a somewhat expensive proposition, given you can by a DV recorder for not much more. However, if you already have a bucket of analogue tapes to transfer, it might be the best option.

Love to hear some more experienced comments to give guidance.
