I keep thinking that there are many people into home theatre now that have an outboard 5.1 audio system and various sources (Cable/satelite/DVD) that eliminate the need for a tuner. It stikes me that a fair chunk of the cost of the new HDTV sets is for electronics that will never be used. Is there a true monitor without tuner and audio? Something the equivalent to a projector except in a HD RPTV form.

Actually, the old style NTSC tuner is a small pc board, generally a Phillips, that doesn't represent much cost addition to any RPTV. All have component inputs, which cause the set to act as a monitor, even disabling some set features in the process. Thanks to the FCC, all new sets will have more expensive digital capable tuners. |
