Sometimes when I play a movie DVD the default language is French, why is that? If the DVD is for the US region, shouldn't the language always be English?

Your DVD player may be set to display a 2nd language. Often there is no alternative or the 2nd language is English (vs American) so you notice little difference.

Check your DVD player.
