Try JVC DR-MV1S if you just want to record from VHS or DV to DVD.
If you want HDD then you can also try DR-MX1S

Too many people starting to have problems with the JVC. Combos are poor quality units.

I got a toshiba combo unit (the D-VKR3SU) and am having a problem watching a rented dvd on it - the aspect ratio can't be adjusted, so it looks squished. It's fine on my regular dvd player. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I got the Lite-On 5005 for X-mas and it works great! Reads and writes all formats and media except for DVD-RAM and the guider menu makes it easy to use. The only downside is it will not decode MTS stereo broadcasts, but that's not a problem for me since my cable box has A/V outs in addition to the RF. Not bad at under $200 Have a look... http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/lvw_5005/lvw_5005.htm
