What does it do if you unlock a DVD player? What is its region and what is the benefit of unlocking its region?

The region depends on where you bought it. Look on the back and it will give the region. The benefit is being able to play DVDs from other regions. I've had one for 6+ years and have never had any need to unlock any of them I've owned.

I AM LOOKING AT A DVD RECORDER + VHS RECORDER COMBO UNIT.
IT HAS A S-VIDEO OUT CONNECTION BUT NOT A S-VIDEO IN CONNECTION. I WANT TO TAKE MY HI-8 CAMCORDER AND PLUG INTO THE DVD RECORDER AND MAKE COPIES. MY CAMCORDER HAS AN S-VIDEO OUT CONNECTION AND RCA OUT CONNECTIONS. WHY WOULD THE DVD RECORDER ONLY HAVE AN S-VIDEO OUT CONNECTION BUT NOT HAVE S-VIDEO IN? THANKS.
