Hi all, I am a dvd recording newbie. I hope some of you can help out. I recently bought a dvr-510. It works fine and I have recorded some tv shows onto the hard drive and then put them on disk. They play fine in my machine. I mailed one to a friend and it wouldnt play on his machine. It is a Sony SLV D201P. I took another disk to a different friends house and it wont play there either. (I didnt get the model number) It displays "NO DISK". They also wont play in my Dell computer with a DVD drive. Is it that the disks made on this recorder just not compatible with these other machines? Or does this recorder put some kind of privacy code on the disks that will only play back in the same machine that they were recorded on? I hope that is not the case. If so, how do you turn it off? Am I picking the wrong recording mode? Or is there nothing else I can do? Thanks,Rich |

Are they DVD-R or DVD-RW? The discs have to be finalized to play in other equipment. DVD-RWs have to be recorded in the video mode not the VR mode to play in most equipment. |

I am using Comp USA DVD-R disks. I thought the recorder did the finalize step automatically. Is this a step I have to do after the disk is recorded? The disks were recorded in VR mode. Thanks |

Standalones don't auto finalize like a computer drive, you have to go into the menu and do it. VR mode is for RW discs, DVD-Rs don't record in VR mode as far as I know. The reason they won't play in other equipment is because they aren't finalized. |

Thanks for the help. I will go into the menu and get the book out and see how to finalize the disks Rich |
