Can you record by just hitting the rec button, and only record what I want or do I have to set
the timer and select a program to record? Will
it cut off parts at the end of a show like Tivo?

You can records shows w/o the TVG data. Not easy to figure out how. The manual sucks. But if you hit "Program Check" and then the green button you can set a timer w/o (or until you receive) the TVG data.

You can set a timer to start recording before the start time and end after.

You can also just hit record if you have the show you wish to record.
