Oh my gosh! Can't believe I fixed my RD2760 after all that I read -- searched and searched and couldn't find an answer. Had the same problem everyone else cites -- siezes up at RCA logo upon startup. Here's what I did:
When I connected to my PC, it wasn't recognized, when prompted to format -- I did so without changing any settings. Then I downloaded firmware from http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/Cultures/en-US/RD2760Firmware207
and ran the program.
The last step says to stop USB device normally -- which I did. Then on the player, it prompted for an upgrade -- and I proceeded.
Went back to my PC and loaded music.

I am sooo happy I don't have to buy a new player.
At the same time I was on e-bay bidding on Motorola i870 phones to replace my MP3 player.
