I know this sounds strange but you may want to pop the dvd in then turn the player on its side or upside down. I had a problem with losing the color and I did what I suggest and it worked. I figured I had nothing to lose.

I have the same problem with my personal Apex DVD player. It plays cd's fine. If anyone has other suggestions... |

Do a search on Apex 1200 repair, I found a site a while back and have successfully opened and stretched 4 springs that the main body rests on.
I don't know what model you have but there is a good chance that they are very similar inside. |
