If I bought an external Sound Blaster Extigy, would that enable me to transfer optically or digitally from a Sony MZ-R700 portable recorder to my PC?

This would seem to be a better way to go than to get a deck to do the transfers. I only use the recorder to capture lectures and not for playback.

The portable players do not have a digital output, so you still have to go through the analog input on your sound card. I think only one Sony MD deck has a digital output (MDS-JB940).
