I have a huge amplifier with two 12" woofers and some tweeters, and for 30 years it has run faultlessly, but now when the volume is turned up past halfway a really load, horrible buzzing/screaching is given.

Is this due to bad capacitors (they are as old as the amp) or what?

That's as good a guess as any.
