My Carver "The Receiver" finally gave up the ghost and I havn't paid attention since the 70's. What is a decent STEREO receiver ($500 range) these days?

amazingly enough, Kenwood is still in business and producing good products in that price range, Harmon-Kardon should be another familar name that goes back 30 years.. Onkyo, Yamaha, and Denon are all major players in that area, no one size fits all answer exists, but if you are not into Video sound, (just 2 channel stereo), Yamaha would be a good choice, or why not anti up and go for a Rotel.. something to think about.
