I am in need of a new A/V receiver and have narrowed down to a Pioneer VSX-D912, a Denon 1804 or a comparable Onkyo. Any suggestions or advice? Also, I'm looking at the Wharfedale MovieStar 60+ speakers for this receiver. Good choice? Are better packages available for around $200.00? All of this goes into a Toshiba 50" Widescreen. Compatible? Thanks!

You are at a price level where there are a lot of compromises. It all depends which features you don't mind missing. Many don't have component input outputs at this price level. Not that important if your dvd player has them and you connect the video coponent cables directly from your dvd player to the HDTV. Many at this price range don't have OSD (on screen display). That can make setting up and alterring settings a drag.

Sound and Vision just had a 3 receiver review on Onkyo 500 series, Panansonic, and Yamaha around this price level. Read that and read some CNET reviews. You can read the Sound and Vision reviews on this site under Home Theatre and then click on surround receivers.

I think I saw a Harman Kardon AVR 225 at Ecost at a bit more than $200--like $225 or so.

You can get a used one on ebay to get more quality for the price - I would recommed a high model of Denon for instance.

I also like the kenwood for a little more.

Onkyo is also good.

I came across a much better one at your price point - Panasonic Sa-xr25. This is a new technology that probably will take over the amp industry in the future - digital amp.

If you can spare $300, Sa-xr45 is even better.

If you upgrade the electric chord like many audiophiles do, it will sound much better.
