Since 200GB+ hard drives are readily available for about $125 I'd like to rip all of my CD collection to hard drive using the FLAC lossless compression. With FLAC I am told that there will be no reduction in fidelity as there is with MP3. Are there any recommendations for PC software applications and operating systems?

If you want to try linux and just want to play music, you might try this (tooting my own horn here a bit):
http://www.musicpd.org

It will allow you to control playback with a web interface (as well as many other ways, such as a remote) and it supports many of the popular formats (mp3, flac, ogg vorbis, aac, etc).
