Thread: Speaker problem, can someone help me? |

One of my speakers has no sound coming out. It has a very soft sound if you put your ear right up to it, and shut off the other speaker. This happened a few days ago. Can this be fixed? Thanks. |

first switch the two speakers to opposite sides
and see if it stays with that speaker.
if it stays then more than likely you have blown
a driver or the crossover is messed up.and yes it
could be fixed but if you don't know how, you will
need someone who does to look at it.
if the problem does not go along with the speaker
then you have a connection problem wire/cable or
something along those lines.and again switch them
from side to side until you find the culprit.
or you may have blown a channel in the amp and it
will need to be serviced.
i dought it would be a fuse because you said you
are getting some sound. |

I switched the speakers, as you suggest. The same speaker does not work on the other set of wires. So the wires are fine.
1) If I open up the speaker, what do I look for? I think I am better off to buy a new one if I need to pay someone to fix it.
2) On the good speaker, does it matter if the two wires are switched on the speakers, or does the black have to hook to black, and red to red? They work fine when I switch them around and the speaker plays fine either way.

what you would look for is burnt components or
broke open caps in the xover.
maybe broken or loose wires.
the polarity on the speakers won't have anything
to do with the speaker working.
you just want both speakers wired the same way so
they sound right.
as far as repairing.it might be very easy and not
cost nuch for someone who knows what they are doing
to fix it.
it you could find someone locally maybe a niegbor
or friend it could be really cheap.
yah if you have to take it in maybe it would be
better off to buy a new one. |

I wish you were my neighbor right now!
1) As for polarity, what do you mean by wired the same way. If each speaker is hooked up with 2 wires that go to that speaker, is the polarity important?
2) If I can hear a tiny bit of sound coming out, when I put my ear close, does this narrow down the problem?

to awnser your first question.
their is a negative and positive input on your
speakers black is negative and red is positive.
their is also a negative and positive output on
your reciever.
if you wire one speaker different then the other
they will be out of phase.kinda like one woofer
going out while one is going in.and they will not
sound right.bad imaging"if at all" loss of frequencies
just plain not correct sound.
to awnser your second question it means nothing to me.
