I've not been doing much listening the last three weeks. My dad was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer three weeks ago and past away last Wednesday. I spent the last three weeks with him and the rest of this week with my mom. Will be going home this weekend. I'm looking forward to listening more to the 10's. I will miss my dad.

Really sorry to hear that Mordecai. It's hard losing the one's were close to...hard to find words. A feel for you and your mom.

My parents are getting older, I can see it. It's never easy letting them go.

Have a good trip home. Cheers.

That really sucks Mord. I'm sure everyone here knows what you are feeling. Sounds like it happened relatively quick (within a few weeks) which makes it that much harder.

I can relate to George's comments. Watching those around you grow old is tough. Then you feel old. It's all such a downer.

I know you guys want me to buy stands. One of these days I think I'm going to drop my money on these babies:

Upload

Now those are stands! Absolutely gorgeous! Sold on Audiogon by Standman. Anyone here ever had experience with them before?

Wood is just so resonant. The fastening systems are subject to failure and degredation, sometimes prematurely, due to handling and environment.

Not sure I understand the issue with wood stands. Most speakers are made from a derivative of some sort of wood fibre product, and metal stands resonate as wood stands do, only the resonance isn't nearly so gentle or natural as a dampened wood stand.

I agree a hollow wood stand would resonate like a son-of-a-gun, but when filled with sand and x-braced, they shouldn't 'ring' significantly. The stands above are 2" thick, so they aren't going to sing as easily as most 1/2" or 3/4" mdf or plywood stands would.

Okay, picked up the fixed Evo2-10 yesterday. Got my Atlas cables today. I totally forgot about your suggestion to call Eugene for the cables, Art. Oh well.

Thinking I'll have pics up by Friday. I plan to get the new gear set up bit by bit. One day to test out the CDP and amp with my current speakers to get a sense of the improvement gained there. Then I'll probably try out the power conditioner. Last I'll introduce the Evo's. I'm going to use old cables for a little while, then add the Atlas' in a few weeks. Might get some sense as to how they affect the sound that way.

It might be better to let each component break in for a few weeks before introducing another, but I don't want to wait. I figure the speakers will change the most with break in anyhow, partially why I'm adding those after the amp and CDP.

I'll put up some pics of the cherry EVO2-10 today. I'm quite happy with them so far. Great detail (similar to the Quads in that respect, but these are warmer, more musical). Bass is amazing, there is no way IMO that Wharfedale's specs are accurate. They say bass response goes down to 57Hz or something like that. It sounds way lower, or maybe it's just how quick and tuneful the bass is.

First, I hooked my Arcam DV135 to my Denon minisystem, with my Tannoy speakers. What I heard was greater separation of instruments, vocals moved forward, and better resolution, but something wasn't right. Too many songs just lost their sense of drive, they became a bit of a sonic mess. The Denon amp input is designed to be connected to a specific Denon CD-R model. Maybe this is the reason for the poor results.

Got rid of the amp, brought in the YBA YA201. Much better. Very smooth sounding, music makes more sense than it ever has out of my system. This thing can go very loud without losing control. Vocals placed dead center and are extremely clear (I think this has something to do with the Arcam) and imaging is great...I can place instruments a lot easier than before.

Added the Evo's. Better detail, better bass, a more restrained high end, great dynamics. These are great speakers for sure. Stuck some rubber feet on the bottom, it cleaned up the sound quite a bit. Without them I could feel the base they are on vibrate, with them there is no vibration on all but the most hard hitting songs, for which there is very little to be felt.

But I don't know...I'm yearning for those PMCs. Such an addictively lush sound. The one thing I'm not loving about my current set up is that some CDs (poorly recorded ones) just don't sound that hot. I guess that is expected, but the PMCs made everything sound great. Or could that have something to do with the Audiolab amp I used them with? Anyhow, I'll play around more. These components are not even close to being broken in.

I've got a nagging feeling that using a DVD player as my source isn't as good as selling it and buying a Rega Apollo! And I wonder how Dynaudio would compare to PMC. I've had my eye on the Focus 140. However, from reading reviews it would seem like they aren't all that dissimilar from the Evo's. Detailed, revealing, and warm with prodigious bass. PMC seems like the way to go for me in the long run.

Last I connected the Ultralink power conditioner. I'm satisfied so far. I think I heard a little loss of dynamics, but it's subtle. But dynamics with the conditioner sound right. The sound feels more consistent overall. Tough to say anything definitively. What I didn't want was a negative impact on PRaT characteristics...and I didn't get it.

I didn't think I was really being negative. Some CDs sound phenomenal, others not so much. It's not the system's fault, but then again I guess some systems won't bring as much attention to this. I think the Evo's are definitely better than my Tannoy's in probably every respect, but of course they are 3x the price (MSRP). The Tannoy's have a harsher high end, less bass, less tuneful bass, less detail, and imaging isn't as precise.

The other factor at work here is that when I heard the PMC's the system was in another part of the room. That will affect things for sure.

Funny, I often have a negative view at the outset. I realize I need to let things settle down before forming a final opinion. At first I didn't like my Tannoy's vs. my Energy C-1's. In the end I realized the Tannoy's were superior, by quite a wide margin. At first I wasn't crazy about the PMC, the more I listened to them however it became addictive and I found myself playing more and more music. And now I am a little unsure about this set up (but again, it's not across the board, only for some CDs, or maybe some kinds of music...not sure yet). Maybe it's the fact that something is changing and there is an inevitable adjustment period.

Will do lots more listening. The Wharfies were not going to be my long term speaker anyhow, I'll probably shuffle them to home theater use eventually. I do want to keep them. I am more sure of the TB2i now more than ever for stereo use though. They've been the only speakers I could listen to just about anything on and love what I was hearing.

Mostly rock, a lot of hard rock. GN'R, VR, Zeppelin, Floyd, The Stones, Bryan Adams, '80s hair bands . But also stuff like Leonard Cohen, The Beatles, Billy Joel. I've been branching off a little. Bought a Norah Jones album recently, Amy Winehouse too. Even a classical album. I'll see how I like those.

Still, I don't want my hifi to dictate what I listen to.

Hey Dan, sweet pics / system. Like it.

As I see you've heard, you're not hearing those speaks the way they are situated. Get them on stands and you can probably kiss the sub goodbye.

In the meantime, just get them up on some hockey pucks or heavy cutting boards with some blu-tack. That cabinet is probably muddying the sound like crazy.

Cheers!

If that's a power conditioner and your amp is plugged into it, unplug it.

Try it straight into the wall. Most power conditioners suck the dynamics out of the music.

Sources don't seem to suffer from it, but amps do. At least in my experience anyway.

For the record, my intergated amp is connected to one. There are far too many lightning storms in the Northeast this time of year to take chances. But then again, I don't think I've ever lost any equipment to lightning anyway. And Bryston will cover it under their 20 year warranty. Their manual says to plug it straight into the wall.
The wheels are spinning.

I don't know Stu. I tried it with and without the power conditioner. I don't think it's hurting the dynamics. It is possible that Ultralink makes a good unit in that respect. There is a special plug for amps and subs, things that require high current, though I'd imagine all conditioners have this. Ultralink warns not to plug any part of the system into the wall directly, because if there is a surge it can affect other components even if they are plugged into the conditioner.

My plan is to eventually hook the YBA up to an Apollo, and a Cambridge Audio 550T tuner (which I'll buy once it comes out, about a month's time). I've got no tuner now, and I just want to buy something that's affordable. I'm really digging the new Cambridge gear. A Rega tuner might match the Apollo a little nicer, but it's also double the price. The question is, when to buy the Apollo.

I feel kind of stupid, using the Arcam, when earlier this year I got a Marantz DV7001. I was going to keep the Arcam for SACD and DVD-A, and use an Apollo for redbook playback; and the Marantz as part of the home theater. But now I'm thinking it seems a waste to use the Arcam just for that. Probably 98% of my listening will be redbook. I can always lug the Marantz from the TV room when I want to hear a DVD-A or SACD.

So I can either keep the Arcam and use it a little, and buy an Apollo to use most of the time.

Or I can sell it and buy an Apollo now.

Or I can sell it and use the Marantz for the time being (it's not being used now). Then buy an Apollo down the road and move the Marantz under the TV and lug it up when I want to listen to his res.

I prefer to keep the Marantz because it does more than the Arcam.

Yeah Art, I'm very happy with the finish. The speakers are great for the most part, digging the low end and mid range, great dynamics, timing, and detail. Acoustic guitar, orchestra strings, and vocals sound amazing. I think the only concern is that I hear a harshness in the treble region and I think this is the culprit for certain songs not sounding as good as I had hoped. When there are lots of cymbals crashing is when I notice this, it kind of becomes a little messy. I noted as well, the electric guitar solo on Bryan Adams "Give Me Your Love" sounds a little thin. Do you notice anything like this?

Also, I think someone earlier in this thread mentioned port chuffing. Can't say it's a huge problem for me, I hear it a little but it's not distracting, but you can really feel air blowing out of the port. On my other speakers I never noticed anywhere close to this much air, though I can't say I really paid much attention to this aspect. And this is what a port is for I guess.

Will see how things progress.

Treble usually smoothes out over time if the speakers aren't fully broken in, so the harshness may abate. The wrong speaker cable/interconnect can be part of that as well.

If you're experiencing harshness in the hi end Dan I would suggest something other than the speaker is the culprit. There is a mismatch somewhere. I've driven the Wharfedales with everything from the Rega Mira 3 and Unison Research Unico P to my Yamaha AVR and haven't experienced any harshness at all.

I may still have to pinpoint what it is that is not quite right. If it is treble, I doubt it's the YBA or the Arcam. Those are not purported to be bright at all. I'll be swapping out the cables in a few weeks. Currently using Audioquest G-Snake interconnect and Chord Rumour 2 speaker cable. Will be replacing those with Atlas cables.

To be honest, a lot of that very revealing sound I heard from my Quads I am hearing in the Wharfedales. Not to the same extreme though.

I think we listen to different music too, Art. There are lots of good rock recordings, but also lots of not very good ones. Even good ones can sound a little thrashy if that's what the music is doing.

Dan, there are many rock recordings where the music is compressed to ridiculous levels. The high end can certainly sound harsh and the sound can be a mish mash as you described. Give the speakers some time to loosen up and things may improve a little although some recordings will still sound bad. I can't say exactly how long it took my Quads to run in and smooth out, but it would have been at least two hundred hours, probably more. I think Kevlar speakers take some time. Get a nice jazz recording with horns, cymbals, etc and have a good listen. I'll bet the sound will be better than Bryan Adams. I doubt the cables will make much difference, if any, to what you are hearing - at least until the speakers loosen and while you keep listening to Bryan Adams :-)

I'm not knocking Mr Adams' music, only the recording process of his and others. There was a Clapton cd I bought which was the same - I could't believe he would let it be released as such.

Dan have you taken out the standard jumpers and replced them with a snip of speaker wire. The standard brass jumpers won't help you get the best from your speakers.

We do indeed listen to different music, however I have a whole bunch of rock records and cd's as well. Probably 10 times more than Nuck's whole collection...lol! No really I do have a bunch of rock as well and know of what you speak. MR's advice is solid, keep running them in and listen to various recordings.

Art, do you mean buy something like the Anti-cable jumpers? I've still got the standard jumpers on. Attached speaker cables the way it said to in the manual.

MR, actually Adams' albums are recorded very well. This particular album was from 1980, I think it was brought to CD in the late 80's, so compression isn't the issue. His albums are probably not as nice as a good jazz record, but there definitely isn't the preoccupation to make his records sound loud. I think that is employed more by harder rock acts, of which I do listen to many. I'd say most of my albums are from the '80s and '90s, an era of much better sound quality.

This may not be the right thread, but I'm curious if any of you guys picked up one of the Beatle's box sets. I'm getting me the mono set.

The a lot of 80's and some very early 90's CDs will sound bright and harsh. Most engineers were used to vinyl and were reportedly over compensating things when transferring to CD.

They weren't compressed like they are today, but that doesn't mean they didn't have their faults by any means. Listen to Black Sabbath's Paranoid on an old CD.

Oh yes, the fact that an album is from the 80's means that it isn't compressed, but those albums definitely don't sound the best. A little thin compared to the sound achieved in the early 90's and onward. But that guitar solo is a little thin sounding compared to what I'm used to hearing.

I looked into jumpers. I'm going to give them a shot. I'll have to have them terminated with banana plugs I guess, since my speaker cable is bare wire. Unless I can just jam the bare wire on a set of jumpers in with the bare wire from my speaker cables into the same terminal. Not sure how good an idea that is.

Well not the one I had Dan, I can't recall the title, but I sold it to a used store ages ago along with other crappy sounding discs. Rubbish in - rubbish out.

Well, I guess it all depends on what standard you hold an album to. His early stuff suffers from being done in the early days of the CD, but it's still very listenable. Cuts Like a Knife, Reckless, and Waking Up the Neighbors, I'd say these three albums are a little flat sounding, lacking some bite; but overall they sound okay. Into the Fire is probably his best album overall, and probably the best sounding (or it could be 18 Til I Die). I really haven't listened to the albums after that though, as his music has mellowed a little to much for my tastes and now is just very unremarkable.

I guess the quality varies, it's not the best I've heard but far from the worst. Relative to other rock albums I'd rank his catalog above average (for sound quality).

Dan,

Get back with a review of that Beatles Mono Box-Set, I'm not a huge Beatles fan, but this new mono remastering has me very curious.

There's a good write up in the new issue of Tone Audio.

October 15th is the estimated ship date on the Beatles set, so I won't be listening to these discs for a while yet.

I've pretty much decided to go for a set of anticable jumpers.

Just wondering, for those who have the Evo2's, how do you have your speaker cables plugged in? Wharfedale seems to suggest one -ve cable in the very bottom terminal, and one +ve cable in the very top terminal. I'm wondering if it make a difference to use the two bottom terminals...this is what I'd normally expect to use. And then the metal links would link up to the top two terminals.

I'm not sure why they would suggest that, I've got my cables plugged into the bottom terminals.

replace the brass strips with bits of speaker wire and follow the X connect pattern.
It may make no difference, or an impressive difference (which I found).

Will do.

Did I mention that after rewiring my vacuum, and fashioning a pair of 10' cables, I still have about 60' of nice sounding Electric Green Woods Technology/Utilitech 16/2 extension cord?

Totem recommends the same thing. I use the top terminals with good results with the Wharfedales and used the x pattern with the Totems...otherwise they were so bright they would have taken my head off.

I just ordered the Beatles White, Sgt, Abbey, Revolver and Rubber..

I grew up listening to the Beatles in stereo, that's where it's at for me. Might get the mono one's down the road sometime though.

I wouldn't wait too long, the mono box-set is a limited edition (10,000?) and is pretty much sold-out everywhere.

I'm thinking those mono recordings might sound real interesting on a single Klipschorn.

If I don't get them I'm ok with that Chris. I have other priorities that are WAY higher than the Beatles in mono.

They might indeed sound interesting on a K'Horn.

I am going to look here in Alabama tomorrow morning. The mono set, plus the last 5 in stereo, sold singly.

Wish me luck!

I kinda get the feeling tht not so many mono sets are sold here...just a hunch.

MSRP was around $240 for the mono set. I guess since they sold out some places raised their prices. CD Universe is selling it for almost $600! However, perhaps that's because it's the Japanese version.

I bought mine from www.elusivedisc.com only two days ago for $240. Try them if you are interested.

What I've heard though, is that in response to the mono selling out, they are raising the number of copies that will be produced. It'll still be a limited edition, but I believe it's either going to 20,000 or 40,000 copies now.

I heard it wasn't going to be limited at all, due to everyone buying them and retailers price gauging because of it.

Who knows?

I guess the hype is working...

I was thinking about picking up a Beatles album, and I don't even like the Beatles.

I know that may be sacreligious to some people. I respect them and all, but that doesn't mean they have to be my cup of tea.

Any one know if the Beatles will get any money out of this, or will Michael Jackson's family be reaping the rewards?

Jackson's estate still owns the entire catalog as far as I know.

I'm not a Beatles fan either (I have both feet firmly planted the The Stones camp), but I do like a few songs, and having grown up with their music all around me, am more than familiar with just about everything they did. Perhaps it is the hype, but these mono recordings have piqued my interest, but I'm not very likely to pluck down $240 for the set.

I just bought some cd's of these young English long haired lads. I hear they are going to really be something so I gave them a go. Their music comes on these round disc thingies and are digitally remastered - digitally remastered, what the hell is that man?

Well, I can tell you these lads are really groovy, I mean, they are far out man. They'll blow your mind!

He heh!

Anyway I got, The White Album, Sgt Peppers, Abbey Road, Let It Be, Magical Mystery Tour, With The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Help, Beatles For Sale, Revolver.

Well, I'm sure those of you that buy some/all of these will be pretty happy with the sound - They seem to have stuck by the original process and improved on the resolution. I listened to random tracks from various discs from earlier recordings to the later. The recording process improvements over the those years are obvious.

Groovy man!

I'm more of a Stones fan myself too. But I really dig a bunch of The Beatles songs, and there are many songs of theirs I just haven't heard yet. Songs like A Day in the Life - just amazing. I'm not crazy about the music they put out early in the career though. More than a little bit dorky!

Overall, I prefer the Stones too Chris, but there are several Beatles tracks I really like and they are spread throughout the cd's I purchased. I was also motivated by nostalgia I guess.

I know this is off topic, but while we are on this nostalgia trip, we watched the DVD of Cadillac Records last night - the story of the origins of Chess Records and some of it's artists - Etta James, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Little Walter, Chuck berry, etc. We were blown away by Beyonce's role of Etta James. Apart from good acting her voice was sensational singing Etta's numbers - especailly "At Last" - well worth watching.

Nuck - I dug.

We have it and my wife keeps wanting to watch it...we probably will tomorrow...but lord I can't stand Beyonce. Her singing is generally over the top, like a pop star who thinks that more is better...it ain't. Movie should be good though.

I don't like her usual singing or music either Art, but she does a great job with Etta's songs. I think you, Sherilyn and Chris will enjoy it though my only complaint was with the guy who played Muddy Waters (can't think of his name right now) was hard to understand at times.

I bought two more of the Beatles cd's towards making up the entire collection. Two to go and they are sold out on the coast here - about mid to end October before new stock including box sets. Seems EMI will be back in the black after this.

Indeed MR...this whole Beatles thing is very hot right now...and we're helping ofcourse. That's alright, I've waited quite awhile for a few of these albums to finally be remastered. It's good to hear that they did it right.

I don't care much for Beyonce either. Is it just me, or does she seem to take herself a little too seriously? I've seen a few interviews, and every question they asked looked like it took such deep thought to answer. Not in a stupid, spaced out way; kinda like she was answering a meaning of life question.

I also thought she sucked in the Austin Powers movie she did.

Stu - agreed, but she surprised the heck out of me in this film.

Art, I believe they certainly remastered these right. I spent a while listening to some of the discs I bought. Sure, there are some cheesy old songs among them, but there are also some real gems. However, I enjoyed them all.

This pic shows how I have the speaker cables connected. This appears to be how Wharfedale suggests connecting the cables in the Evo2 manual. I think I'll change it up though, moving the positive cable down to the lower terminal. It just seems to me to be a strange way of connecting the cable (to use the lowest and highest terminals), but then again I can't imagine it making much difference.

Dan, it's supposed to make a difference hooking them up that way, I don't know why but Totem Acoustics also recommend a similar hookup.

Now why would Totem & Wharfedale, and perhaps other manufacturers, recommend such a thing?
